Ridge Modification

Damages and malformations in the upper or lower jaw leave you with insufficient bone structure that is inefficient in holding the dental implants in place. These deformations are a result of gum disease, trauma, injury, wearing dentures, or birth defects. They also cause aesthetic issues by displaying an unattractive section in the jawline.  Ridge modification is a surgical procedure. An incision is made to lift the gum from the ridge to expose the defect in the bone. The defected area is filled with bone or its substitute to rebuild the ridge. The gum is then sutured back in place. The bone regenerates itself and strengthens the bone structure.

Ridge modification improves the aesthetic value of your face and improves the success rate of dental implants.

What are the different types of ridge modifications?

Several procedures are used for re-growing bone in a damaged ridge. The choice of the procedure depends on numerous factors, such as:

  • Area of the mouth.
  • Volume of the bone that needs regeneration.

The different procedures available are:

Onlay graft or block graft

A small piece of bone is fastened with a small fixation screw into the bone deficient area. Any of the following types of bone pieces can be used:

  • Allografts

Allografts use bone tissues from a deceased donor. The bone tissues are clean and stored in a tissue bank.

  • Autografts

Autografts use bone tissues from your own body parts like hips, ribs, wrist or pelvis.

Guided bone regeneration

The ridge deformity is treated by re-growing bone, using bone tissue and a specialized membrane.

Infuse bone graft or BMP

Bone morphogenetic protein or BMP helps in re-growing bone. BMP is isolated in a laboratory and is used for bone regeneration.

Ridge splitting

Ridges with a narrow width are split and extended at the time of implant placement.
